American Association of University Women Bon Air Area Branch Click here for the May 2008 newsletter The Bon Air Area, Virginia branch of the American Association of University Women was established in 1976. Because of our convenient location to the Virginia General Assembly, our branch has a strong public policy background. We consistently have interesting programs and projects that attract members and the general public as well to our meetings. We usually meet every month from September to May on the second Tuesday of the month and occasionally on weekends. In keeping with AAUW’s mission we are dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls. One of the ways we do this is to work with the girls at the Eleventh House here in Richmond. The girls at the Eleventh House come from at-risk situations and are provided with a home with a family atmosphere where they can learn basic life skills so that they can be productive adults. One of their greatest needs is attention and this is something we can provide by doing craft projects and just chatting with them. We also try to expose them to different employment situations. Our fund-raisers help us donate to the Educational Foundation (EF), which helps women with grants and scholarships and the Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF), which gives money to women seeking judicial redress for sexual discrimination. Click here for information on EF and LAF. We also monitor the state legislators and if necessary we notify them to express our opinion on issues important to women and girls. We are especially interested in issues concerning gender equity, public education, access to quality affordable health care, freedom from violence and sexual harassment, and choice in reproductive decisions. We are
located just south of the James River and new members are always
welcome. Click here
